If you’ve spent any time on the Ridge, you know that recreation isn’t just something we do — it’s part of who we are.

As the Recreation Supervisor for the Paradise Recreation and Park District, and someone who has lived in both Paradise and Magalia for over a decade, I’ve had the privilege of helping shape programs for youth, families, and adults across our community. I guide and lead programs at Paradise Lake — including our astronomy nights — coordinate special events, and work alongside incredible community partners to keep the Ridge active and connected.

Whether you’re new to town or a longtime local looking for something fresh, here’s how I recommend exploring recreation on the Ridge — broken down by age group.

Early Childhood & Elementary School (Ages 3–11)

For young families, the Ridge offers one of the most complete early recreation ecosystems you’ll find in a small mountain community.

It often begins with the Tiny Tots Program through PRPD — a preschool enrichment program that has been operating consecutively for nearly 40 years. Generations of Ridge families have come through Tiny Tots, building early learning skills, social confidence, and friendships that often last well beyond kindergarten.

As children grow into elementary school, their opportunities expand dramatically.

Seasonal camps become cornerstone experiences. Camp Courage through PRPD offers structured summer programming rooted in outdoor exploration, resilience, and community-building. Families also benefit from summer enrichment opportunities through the Boys & Girls Club of the North Valley .

Water safety and confidence are emphasized through PRPD’s swim lessons and aquatic programs — equipping children with essential life skills in a region where lakes and water recreation are part of everyday life.

Middle School & Teen Years (Ages 12–17)

One standout program is the Esports Tournament – The Ridge Holiday Classic, a partnership between PRPD and the Boys & Girls Club of the North Valley. This structured tournament blends competitive gaming with mentorship, teamwork, and digital citizenship — providing a positive, supervised environment for teens to compete and collaborate.

For creatively inclined youth, PRPD offers guitar classes, as well as a growing ballet and dance partnership program with North State Ballet, giving teens outlets for artistic expression, discipline, and performance.

Traditional youth sports remain strong through collaboration with local schools, reinforcing athletics and school-community partnerships. Whether playing baseball with Paradise Little League or soccer with the Paradise Ridge Youth Soccer Club, there is always seasonal sporting action for this age group.

Families can also take advantage of cycling routes like the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail, the trail around Paradise Lake, and the developing trail systems at Bille Park. Looking ahead, PRPD has plans for a ropes course and flow track (pump track) at Bille Park — expanding adventure-based recreation in the coming years.

Leadership opportunities continue to grow, with youth advisory roles and hands-on involvement allowing teens to help shape programming, build confidence, and strengthen their voice in the community

Adults (18–59)

Recreation on the Ridge isn’t just for children.

Adult softball leagues are a local favorite, along with seasonal softball tournaments that bring teams together from across the region.

Outdoor enthusiasts can plug into kayak rentals and guided paddle events at Paradise Lake. Yoga and fitness classes offer accessible wellness opportunities, and the Paradise Horsemen’s Association supports a strong equestrian community.

Seniors & Active Older Adults (60+)

The Ridge has a vibrant and engaged older adult community.

Walking groups and fitness classes help residents stay mobile and socially connected. Paradise StrongER plays a leadership role in this space, partnering with PRPD to expand wellness opportunities.

The Ridge Hiking Association, a collaboration between Paradise StrongER and PRPD, brings residents together to explore local trails safely and socially.

Social clubs like the Ridge Quilters Association, lifelong learning workshops, and heritage skill classes offer creative and intellectual engagement.

Once again, volunteerism stands out. Many of our most impactful programs are supported by older adults serving as mentors, event volunteers, trail stewards, and community ambassadors.

Things to Do

Arts and Culture : Paradise Performing Arts Center is a state of the art venue that hosts a variety of events from theater to concerts and more. Theatre on the Ridge (TOTR) has been producing live dramas since 1980 and is the oldest non profit community theater north of Sacramento. TOTR puts on seven full length performances annually so there is always something new and interesting to enjoy.

Outdoors: Getting out on the water of Paradise Lake is an excellent way to enjoy the natural beauty on The Ridge. The 204-acre lake is surrounded by trees and has plenty of other areas available for a variety of outdoor activities. Medical Services

Adventist Health has two locations in Paradise that offer a variety of services ranging from behavioral health, dental, dermatology, primary care, rapid care, specialty care and womens health.

The Feather River Health Center is currently undergoing a 2.4M renovation and expansion with an estimated completion date of December 2023, and accepting new patients January 2024.

The Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail spans 5.1 miles along what was once the Butte County Railroad. A perfect trail for all experience levels, you may even spot a deer or two along your way. If you have some time, take a moment to read the plaques along the trail which tells the story of Paradise pioneers and the community local history.

Plan your trip around a visit to Paradise Community Park and the Depot Museum, adjacent to the trail or take a detour to shops and restaurants along Skyway.

Forks of Butte Creek Recreation Area

Just north of Magalia you will find the Forks of Butte Creek Recreation Area, a beautiful forested area that is home of a couple of trails. Butte Creek Trail starts at Doe Mill Bridge and goes along the west side of the creek for one mile. The Indian Springs Trail, is another great trail for views of Butte Creek. The trail begins with sights of serpentine (California’s State rock) and declines for 1.5 miles into Butte Creek Canyon where you are treated to an assortment of trees and wildflowers.

Outside of The Ridge there are other options in nearby cities with excellent trails as well.

In Chico, at Lower Bidwell Park you will find the Center Gap-Humbug Loop which is a challenging trail with an elevation change of 4,000 feet.

The Brad Freeman Trail in Oroville is 41 miles long with tons to explore including gold rush history, Oroville Dam, railway tunnels and more. See other Butte County trails here .

Where to Stay:

Locally Owned, Family Operated : The Ponderosa Garden Motel is an excellent option for you and your family on your trip to The Ridge. There are plenty of rooms and it is located in the heart of town and near other activities in the area.

Where to Eat:

Known for their signature coffee and creative bites, Lofi Café is a local favorite in Paradise. Their menu features crowd-pleasers like the Mother Clucker Baglewich and house-brewed coffee. Stop in for breakfast or lunch and enjoy the cozy, community vibe.

Make a visit to Mountain Mikes for delicious hot pizza and a great selection of draft beer.

Maria’s Kitchen is known in town for its tamales and serves a delicious array of authentic homemade foods with both indoor and outdoor seating. Check their facebook page to see what live music events they have going on.

What to Do:

Visit a Candy Factory : See chocolates, candies and confections being made in the candy kitchen at Joy Lyn's Candies & Confectionary Factory . The shop has called The Ridge home since 1969 and is known for their award winning Beer Brittle made with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Go Fruit Picking : From July through March stop by Noble Orchards to pick apples and peaches. You can also purchase some of their delicious fruit at the local farmers markets. Or celebrate all things apple during Johnny Appleseed Days !

Go For a History Hike : Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail is a converted railroad that is now a five mile paved trail. Along the trail you will find 31 plaques with information on Paradise pioneers and the community.

During your walk take a small detour to enjoy Ridge Top Parlor ! A local favorite for cool treats and good vibes. Ridge Top Parlor serves handcrafted ice cream in fun, seasonal flavors that keep the whole family smiling. Stop in, grab a scoop, and enjoy a sweet break on the Ridge.

Play Disc Golf : At Magalia Community Park you will find South Pines Disc Golf a 40 Acre, 18 hole course with 70 different basket locations that are switched weekly. The course is open 7 days a week and hosts various events and tournaments. On hole 18 treat yourself to Izzy's Bar & Grill and check out the Magalia Community Center .

Take in the Views : Bille Park is an excellent place to enjoy the outdoors on The Ridge. Spend some time in the park or follow the trail for a breathtaking view of Butte Creek Canyon.

Paradise Lake

Paradise Lake is a 204-acre lake with sparkly blue waters surrounded by beautiful green trees. The lake provides a unique opportunity for visitors and residents to enjoy kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking and more. Enjoy a picnic and take in the views, let the kiddos run around on the play structure and take advantage of all the educational/recreational programs and events throughout the year hosted by the Paradise Recreation and Parks District .

Parks

The Ridge is currently home to five parks, with five others coming soon. Each park offers something unique to enjoy including horseback riding, disc golf, BBQ/Picnic Areas and trails to explore. You are sure to create lasting memories with family and friends, including the furry ones, while exploring any of the parks on The Ridge.

One of the most exciting developments is Lakeridge Park which will be located in Magalia. The Park will feature a new recreation center, grass play field, outdoor sport court, adventure playground, two traditional playgrounds, a swing complex, hiking/walking/biking paths, botanical garden, amphitheater and interactive water fountain. Lake Ridge Park is set to open in Spring 2026.

Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail

The Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail (formerly the Paradise Memorial Trailway) is a former railroad bed that has been converted to a path. The Trail runs parallel to Skyway for much of its length and features over 30 plaques commemorating Paradise history and pioneers, particularly near Paradise Community Park.

Disc Golf

South Pines Disc Golf , a project of Magalia Community Park, is an 18-hole course on 40 Acres, and 70 different basket locations (switched every week). The park is Open 7 days a week from dawn until dusk and host events and tournaments. Cost to play is $5 green fee per player/per round or $12 all day pass, Izzy's Bar & Grill and the Community Center are located on hole 18.

Kayaking

Kayaking is a great way to get exercise and enjoy being out on the water. If you do not own a kayak, no problem, rentals are available at Boat Launch #2 on Paradise Lake. The Paradise Parks and Recreation Department even offers classes and tours for all skill levels. For an extra special treat and to meet others in the community, join in on one of their Community Paddle Days.

Paradise Park and Recreation District Activity Guide

The Paradise Park and Recreation District (PRPD) makes it fun and easy to enjoy nature and wellness on the Ridge. PRPD hosts a number of activities and events throughout the year for children and adults. Be sure to check out their website and activity guide to see what exciting activities they have planned.

Biking

There are biking trails both on The Ridge and in neighboring cities. Paradise Lake and the Yellowstone Kelly Heritage Trail are both great options via bike. They are excellent during any time of year and can be enjoyed by all skill levels.

Theater on the Ridge (TOTR) has been producing live dramas since 1980 and is the oldest non profit community theater north of Sacramento. TOTR puts on seven full length performances annually so there is always something new and interesting to enjoy.

At Paradise First Christian Church country music lovers can enjoy dancing to a live band on the second Friday of every month. The event is free to attend and begins at 7pm.

Go to a concert, or any other event, at the Paradise Performing Arts Center . They host a wide variety of events, so stay up to date by checking out their calendar .

Coming Soon! Burnt Barn Distilling Co. : Burnt Barn Distilling Co. will use locally sourced, organic materials to create spirits right in Paradise. Grains such as corn, wheat, rye, barely, and rice, will be used to hand craft spirits such as bourbon, rye whiskey, vodka, gin and liqueurs.

Paradise and Magalia Today: Rebuilding After the 2018 Fire

The whole world had eyes on Paradise and Magalia during 2018 when the Camp Fire devastated the area.

However, “Contrary to reports, Paradise was never completely lost, with 40% of its business infrastructure largely unaffected, and 60% of Magalia homes intact.”

As the fifth anniversary of the Camp Fire has recently passed, a lot has changed on The Ridge.

First Five Years

After the Camp Fire the community took immediate action to make the area safe for residents.

The plastic, metal, and composite culvert pipes throughout town that melted from the heat of the fire were replaced with fire-resistant concrete pipes at various locations. Guard rails were replaced along the lower skyway that were burned and damaged in the fire. Within one year a total of 3.6 million total tons of debris were removed —the same “ton” total as four Golden Gate bridges creating a cleaner, safer community.

Measures have also been taken to make commuting throughout town safer for all. A signal light was installed at the four-way intersection of Skyway and Black Olive Drive, to ensure a safer driving experience for every day and evacuations. The Pentz Road Safe Routes to School Project increased safety for students and other pedestrians in a highly trafficked area that was once unsafe.

The most recently completed project is the Early Warning Sirens (EWS) in the town of Paradise. This includes twenty-one siren towers that provide a redundant warning system for residents and visitors in Paradise of potential or emergent hazards that threaten life and property.

As part of a downtown revitalization initiative, Downtown Almond Street has new drainage systems, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, paths, lighting, and landscaping. This allows for a safe, walkable downtown encouraging new businesses to come in and multifamily units to be built. It also creates an excellent place for the community to gather and support local merchants.

Paradise High School recently celebrated the grand opening of a new 31K sqft administration and classroom building as well as the re-opening of a newly remodeled science building and library. Paradise Junior High School celebrated a similar milestone when they reopened with new classrooms, gymnasium and pickle ball court. Other complete projects include new buildings and classrooms at Ridgeview High School and Paradise Ridge Elementary School.

Coming Next

Although a lot of progress has been made the community is committed to continuing to improve with other projects planned for the future.

Road Improvements; 93 miles of public roads are being repaired, connected and widened to improve driving and safety.

Sewer Project: The Sewer Project in the downtown area is in progress and will allow for more businesses and higher-density residential developments to be built. The new sewer will eliminate some of the hurdles larger establishments face when opening up shop as well as improve for future development of the town.

Underground of Utilities: Undergrounding utilities, like internet and phone lines, creates a quicker more reliable service for residents and businesses.

Paradise Unified School District: Paradise Unified School District is working at every single school site building 21st century classrooms. Some of their upcoming milestones include a Ribbon Cutting for the newly renovated Pine Ridge School and a groundbreaking ceremony at Cedarwood Elementary School.

Take in the View and Visit "Locks of Love" : At Butte Creek Watershed Lookout (AKA “Lookout Point”) along the Skyway you will find a breathtaking view of the "mini grand canyon". If you are visiting in the fall - orange, yellow and red hues fill the trees in the canyon. The fence at Lookout Point is filled with padlocks inscribed with names of couples symbolizing their love locked in forever. Stop by to add your own lock and watch a beautiful sunset.

Learn history : The Gold Nugget Museum hosts the yearly Gold Nugget Days, celebrating the area's role in Gold Rush history.The museum currently features rotating mini-exhibits in the lobby while they work towards opening our exhibition hall. Admission is free .

From snowy winter mornings and spring’s first wildflowers, to cool summer hikes and autumn’s vibrant foliage, there’s always an adventure to be had year-round. Our mountain air brings a fresh change of pace and a full calendar of local events, so whatever your rhythm, you’ll feel right at home in every season.

Winter

You do not have to travel far to experience a winter wonderland on The Ridge. More common in Magalia, winter snowfalls often occur on The Ridge providing a special treat for those that love the cold. The area also hosts events perfect for getting into the Holiday spirit. Winter is truly a magical time on The Ridge.

Spring

In the Spring, the daffodils arrive and fill the town with their beautiful bright color. This is an amazing time on The Ridge when the trees are a lush green color and is a great for some disc golf at Magalia Community Park. Get out and stretch your legs, listen to the birds chirping and keep your eye out for wildlife.

Summer

Enjoy the sunshine and cooler summer temperatures as you explore Paradise Lake and the other outdoor attractions in town. This is a great time to take advantage of all the outdoor activities on The Ridge including, hiking, kayaking, fishing and more. Fall

A true mark of the Fall season is Johnny Appleseed Days , a 135 year tradition on The Ridge. This two day celebration features apple pie, local merchants, a kids zone and is a celebration of the community.

Bille Park

Bille Park is next to Butte Creek Canyon and features a picnic area, BBQs and gazebo surrounded by a redwood grove. If you follow the trails around the park you will be treated to a view of the canyon’s natural beauty.

Paradise Lake

The view at Paradise Lake is one of a kind with its serene waters and green trees. The best way to take in the view at the lake is from the water or one of the walking paths. Kayak rentals are available at Boat Launch #2.

Butte Cree k Watershed Lookout

Along the Skyway you will find the Butte Creek Watershed Lookout featuring breathtaking view of the watershed which looks like a mini grand canyon. If you are visiting in the fall orange, yellow and red hues fill the trees in the canyon.
